Hi everyone,
I have a question about using 18-5186 or 339-832757A4 coils to replace my two cracked 339-5288T2 original coils. This is a 1979 mercury 40 hp, 2 cylinder thunderbolt CDI ignition. serial number 5482134. They look similar, but I noticed the originals have a fine wire coming out of the coil winding and gets pinched between the rubber cover and the rear mounting support bracket when the coils are mounted with their covers to the bracket. It looks like there is a grounding strap off of the (-) side terminal of the 339-832757A4 style coil that rests on the coil body frame. Is this an issue with mounting this coil with this system? The reason I'm considering this is the cost factor between the two styles of coils $70 as compared to $22.
If anybody has had any experience with this coil swap I would be interested to know. Thanks, Bob
