Power Steering stalls engine

I have a 1978 mercruiser 228. Last summer the power steering pump started causing my engine to stall. I can turn the wheel all the way to the right stop with no problems, but when I turn all the way left in idle or slow speed the engine will stall after the steering pump whines like it does when you are at full stop. I've always had the whining at the full stops, but it never stalled the engine. Is there an adjustment somewhere that will prevent the pump from being over stressed at the full stop location?

sound like something binding up, either bushings or steering cylinder

Ayuh,.... It's at the Steering Wheel,..... Just Don't crowd it against the Stop....:rolleyes:

I'm not crowding it on purpose. It stumbles when it hits the stop like when I'm trying to back into the dock. It didn't use to do this and it doesn't do it when turning to starboard. I got caught in a ferocious downpour while on patrol with the CG Auxiliary and had to hug a bridge support to keep from drowning the boat. It took a little bit of maneuvering and it died a couple times at the most inopportune time. There has to be something that has moved. Any ideas?
