Guys Im new here. I did a search but no one seems to have the same issue.
I have 86 merccrusier alpha1. Last year I had to change gimbal bearing. Took it all apart put back together no problems. Went out on the water. Boat would stall. Adjusted the shift cable it ran like a dream.
This year I undercover the boat. Had to change starter so i took the riser off. Unbolted the shift plate hung it to the side. Didnt touch any adjustments nothing. Hung it out of the way. Wel I bolt it all back and shift into foward goes right in. Neutral goes right in. Now reverse click click. So i try to adjust no luck. I would get it into foward, into reverse then back to foward click click. Seems like I can get only one or the other. I took shift cable to the outdrive off the shift plate. i can shift by hand. I worked the cable in and out it goes with little tension. I took cable from shift controls off and that slides like a hot knife in butter. it back and same problem. The control cable seemslike its not pushing the lever enough. Almost like it shrunk. With The cable adjustment maxed out it still doesnt push far enough. I wd40 the kill switch it all moves nicely. Im lost here. I spent 5 hours trying to adjust it by the manuel. Is there so kind of adjustment on the kill switch besides the brass barrel? how easy should the outdrive shift by hand? I have to give it slight force. Almost like a lawn tractor. I feel no difference in tension from previous years. Any ideas? Im going nuts.....
