Removing 1998 150 lower unit

I have done a few Johnson /Evinrudes...Need to change water pump..This is a 1998 150 Yamaha V-6....Where does the shift rod seperate from the power head...is it under the bottom carb where the linkage is or does it come out of the lower unit when removing....Thanks in advance

It's just a collar and a spline. Will just slip apart. Leave it in neutral and be careful with the speedo attachment..it's plastic and can break off. Ask me how I know...:rolleyes:
Also use some grease to hold the big oring that goes around the housing. They have a habit of moving as everything goes back together. Don't forget the hidden bolt under the trim tab.

If I understand you right in neutral it slps out of the lower unit...???
