I have a 1962 40HP Johnson Short shaft, my new boat is made for a longshaft, I found a guy selling a 1977 35HP Johnson long shaft.

My question is what kind of performance can I expect from the 35 HP compared to the 40HP the 35HP is 15 years newer.

Any thoughts on this topic would be great.

The 40hp has a lot of torque and will get a lot of weight on plane, but is also very heavy compared to the '77 35hp and drinks a lot more gas. I'd want to check the compression on the '35 and the condition of the lower unit oil after running it for a while on the muffs, at least. If they were in equal condition, I'd take the 35hp., especially since it has the required longshaft motor.

the 40hp is really nice and all but more gas heavier i guess and the 35hp again is a longshaft
