Hello all,
Im having a problem with my new to me 1998 Johnson 175 Fast Strike engine Model#J175GLECD.I read on here where some other members have had similar problems but cant seem to find the answer.Ive had this motor for a little over a week and everytrhing was great for a few fishing trips then now it will start and run great at the ramp on initial launch but after stopping and fishing for awhile and starting it back up to move fishing locations it will idle rough but not die until i give it throttle to take off. When it does this it smokes heavily and rinks of fuel like it is flooded. If i rev the motor up long enough i can finally take off but it is very sluggish to get out of the hole. But once im up on plane everything is back to normal 63-66 mph top speed until i stop to fish again and then go to move location it starts back all over again.Im going to try to take it in to the shop soon just wanted to get an idea of what might be wrong beforehand or if i can fix it myself. Thanks for all the help,
Kelly

sounds like it is flooding, float needles not seating properly.

OK guys have some new info.I just hard the carbs removed and cleaned, along with new spark plugs. The problem is still there and if any seems to be getting worse.Fished a bass tournement last night and everytime after stopping to fish i was spending up to 20 minutes trying to get the boat moving, but once moving all was fine and dandy until next stop.

I added oil to my VRO before the tourney and for the first time on one initial start where i could not get it going but it finally took off but as soon as it did the LOW OIL alarm went off.Checked oil level and added more but i never have seen it use that much so quickly.Could my VRO be going bad and that be my problem with rough idle and excessive smoking from pumping in too much oil?
Couple people at the ramp told me it was a bad Power Pack that these engines were notorious for them going out after 7-8 years.

Thanks guys

Clamp the hose on the primer solenoid closed to be sure that it is not allowing fuel to enter the intake manifold. The primer solenoid valve is an easy 10 minute repair and cheap.
