Problem With 1972 Mercruiser Water Going To Motor

Ok so we have a 1972 mercruiser inboard outboard 165 hp motor we replaced the impellor on it thinking that would solve the problem however it didnt there is still no water going to the motor I pulled the line off of the pump on the top of the engine and put a water hose in it and water was coming out of the back section and i put the plug in it to test the water going in no water is coming through and yes I had the engine started... What are my next steps that I can do to get this darn thing running again??? I dont want to take it to a shop any help is appreated....

You forgot the impeller keyway
You mis-assembled the water pump
The hose from gimbal to transom popped off the fitting
Pull the drive, insert one half of a washing machine hose in the water inlet and test.Water should only exit the exaust. Anyplace else is your problem
If your good to here, pull the lower and inspect.
