I have a 1985 3.0L (140hp) mercruiser with very low hours. I've owned it since 1987. The cyclinder head has a crack in the rear of the block, water jacket. The engine runs well, just spits water. I pulled the head and plan on mig welding the crack. In case this doesn't work, I was wondering if the head was used on any GM vehicles. I've read several threads on this forum that suggest it was used on the chevy line and others that claim the head is specific to marine versions of the engine. Does anyone have any experience swapping the head with a vehicle version? The head is stamped GM 2 2778854.

Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the reply.

I figured that was the case. I probably wouldn't want to use a used car part even if available. I'm sure any vehicle from this vintage would have extremely high mileage and therefore be less apt to be in serviceable condition.

Thanks:)

If you still plan on welding it you should do your homework on welding cast iron pre and post heating the welded area and using the correct filler wire and or rod is critical. I would suggest having the head rebuilt when finished with the welding if it's successfull.
