AQ125 Expansion Tank Troubles

I have had quite a time removing the heat exchanger. My 1981 Capri (that I just bought 2 months ago) hasn't seen any water or attention for many years. Need a new Strainer Housing. I know there're expensive. But, my question is: Do I need to remove the expansion tank to get to the thermo. I would like to check the thermo. out for possible replacement. But the 13 screws that hold the cover on the tank are rusted in place. I'm thinking about using small amounts of heat. I'm hoping that I don't break any of them off. Any suggestions would be appreciated. But, is all this trouble worth it?

Thanks for the help.

Why do you want to remove those 13 screws on the heat exchanger? The t-stat is not behind those. It's located behind the heat exchanger at the top right side. Changing the t-stat is no big deal but you will want to get new sealing rings and gaskets.
