I have a 1957 evinrude 18 hp. In looking at my sierra catalogue and on this site for a reseal kit the only 18 listed is 1958 and up, would this be the same
for the 57? if not could someone supply me with a current number?

thanks steve

I have a 1957 evinrude 10 hp. In looking at my sierra catalogue and on this site for a reseal kit the only 18 listed is 1958 and up, would this be the same
for the 57? if not could someone supply me with a current number?

thanks steve

There was a major change in the 10hp gearcase for 1958, so no it won't fit a '57. Sierra doesn't list a kit for it, so you will have to order individual parts from an Evinrude dealer. OMC did not sell seal kits back in those days--you had to pick out the separate parts you need. Do you have a parts list for your motor? If not, that is the first thing you should buy. Good luck finding the parts without one, unless you find that rare dealer that will help you. Most of them won't/can't because they don't have a book either.

OK, here's the skinny on the matter: Sierra does not have the prop shaft seal for the '57 and older 15/18hp motors, therefor they do not have a seal kit for them either. Their 18-2684 has all the other seals, but includes the wrong prop shaft seal. Here are the part numbers for your '57:

Drive shaft seal- 321788, Sierra 18-2032
Shift rod seal- 301877, 18-7100
Fill plugs washers- 307552, 18-2945
Drive shaft o-ring- 303067, 18-7116
Spegetti seal- 309044 (50 ft roll) 18-2534
Prop shaft seal- 302495, No Sierra
Bearing head o-ring- 302493, 18-7112

The 302495 prop shaft seal is $35. Another way around the problem is to order the 18-2684 seal kit (1958-73) and get somebody to make a reducing sleeve to adapt the newer seal from the kit to your gearcase head. I have done a few.

Or, you could take your old seal to a Kaman Bearing Store and match it up by dimension, or if the CR-number is visible, they can look it up that way. Should run a lot less than $35.00...
