I have a 150 HP 1995 Evininrude Intruder on my 17' hydrosport 185. I have owend the boat for over two years and never had any problems out of the motor....Until two weeks ago. I got on the lake early in the morning just like always, got the boat off the trailer and ran to the first fishing hole 2 miles up river. The motor ran fine just like always. I fished that hole for a little over an hour and headed for the next hole. As soon as I got on plane the motor lost power, it felt like I hit something, I stopped turned the motor off and raised it out of the water. Nothing.....So I put the motor back down fired it up again, sounded fine at idle, so put in gear and put the hot foot down to get out of the hole. About half way up to plane it does the same thing, so I try to just force it to run. I can't get RPMS above 2000 and it runs very rough. Giving up I head back to the ramp, just barley able to get the boat on plane, Along the way the motor had a few very short spurts of normal running but they never lasted more than a few seconds. Heat broken that baby has failed me I put it on the trailer and head home. Six or so hours later I get her back out to "just check things out" I run the boat for 15 min or so minutes with stopping and it runs just fine. I take it to the shop anyway just so they can check it out. the mechanic says he ran it hard for 30 mins with out stopping and it runs just fine.

So I pay them for their time and take my baby home, today I leave work early just to go fishing (and to test the boat for myself). I take her off the trailer fire it up and let it idle for 5 or so mins....no problems. I run about 3 miles up river as close to wide open as i can get this takes about 15 or 20 mins again no problem. I stop and fish for about an hour and head to the next hole again about 10 min of driving almost full throttle. Again, no problems....so I fish for about anther half hour or so,then I begin to head back to the ramp, a bout half way up to plane the motor does the same thing again except this time I cant get much above 1500 RPMS and if I let the motor idle it will run for a min or so them die, if I put it in gear and try to give it gas if I get past about 1/4 throttle it bogs down and dies. This time it will not get up to plane it will just barley go fater than idle speed and if i give to much gas it bogs down and dies.

I am not that experienced with fixing 2 stroke motors, and don't really do much work on the motor myself. Is there anything I can tell mechanics to check for?

Any suggestions or Ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Re: 1995 Evinrude Inturder losing power HELP!?

Intermittent electrical problems can be very hard to find, the motor must be ran under load to reach full temp before the problem surfaces. Running it in the shop on a hose it never really gets to that temp.

I suspect that either the ignition module or stator is having a heat related failure but due to the expense, you do not want to just throw spendy parts at it, hoping that I am right.

You need a DVA Meter and the chart of values for your model ignition. Run the boat until it begins to falter then immediately begin testing the components to determine the correct fault.

You can look up the testing values, wire colors, etc. in the free Ignition Troubleshooting Guide from CDI found thru this link

Re: 1995 Evinrude Inturder losing power HELP!?

I just posted a similar thread. I have a 1995 175hp Johnson. Check it out it may help. - I suggest checking the grounding of your power pack, I think its my problem too - it happened to me about 3yrs ago.

To check it, you must completly remove the power pack, and clean the silver metal piece that mounts between the power pack and the motor, and check the bolts that mount the power pack - this is fairly easy to do.. My thread details what else it could be.
