The manual says 59-63 for dwell. It also says 16-20 for gap. That's not possible.Any clue which one I should go by?

Re: AQ151 dwell angle

16-20 is the point gap in thousanths of an inch (.016 - .020) and is measured with a feeler gauge with the distributor cam lobe turned so the points are open their widest. Dwell is expressed in degrees (59 - 63 degrees) and requires a dwell meter to measure. The end result is you are doing exactly the same thing with either method. The numbers themselves are not related and you don't do both procedures. If you don't have a dwell meter, use a feeler gauge. If you don't have a feeler gauge use a dwell meter. If you have neither, use a matchbook cover to get reasonably close. If you don't have one of those well -- off to the store you go.

Best way is to use a dwell meter. Remember that you need to readjust your timing as setting the dwell affects the timing.

59 to 63 degrees is not possible. It is about .010 in gap.Any real thoughts?

You can see why I'm confused.I couldn't get it to even run at 63 degrees.32 sounds closer to reality.I'll try that.Thank you.

32 sounds like the dwell for an 8 cylinder engine. Are you reading your dwell meter correctly? Also, dwell affects timing so you need to check that after you set the dwell.

If you set the gap to .016 as per the manual, the dwell is 38 degrees. Now what?

well, you could adjust the dwell to about 45 or 50 if it still runs, and readjust the timing. see if it runs better, if so recheck the dwell and continue adjusting toward 62 +/-. Reset your timing again and see where your at.

Are these new points? I adjusted the dwell on my boat last set of points and had similar findings, much smaller gap than i would have expected. I put new points in this spring, gapped them using a feeler gage and the dwell was close, only minor adjustment from that point.

remember, by adjusting the points you are adjusting the dwell. The dwell is the most accurate measure.

Good Luck.
