Another choke question

I'm curious as to whether my Mercruiser 4.3 (1996) has an electronic choke, and if so is there any way I can check if its working properly. The choke sometimes kicks in on cold start up with the engine idling at around 1200rpm. Other times the engine starts hard and idles at its normal 600-700 rpm.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice anyone can give me to resolve this.

Re: Another choke question

The fact that it's a 96 means it's electric.
On a cold engine open the throttle to about 1/4 throttle. Look at the choke, it should be closed. Then turn the key to start (does not need to be started). The choke should slowly open to full open within a few minutes.

Thanks. So just to make sure i do this right, i just turn the key to ignition point and dont crank over / start the engine?

Re: Another choke question

Correct - that should have read turn key to ON, but not start.

Is this 4.3 a 2bbl or 4bbl carb. If it is the 4bbl then it is a weber and does not have an electric choke.
