Default evinrude forward gear

My 1969 40 horse with push button trans,
this moter had set in a barn for several years but started right up with new gas and spark plugs so I took it to the lake and set out.
about a quarter mile out at full throtal it seemed to go into neutral
it would shift into rev. and out to neutral but not into forward it seems to be sending fire from the switch to the trans but no shift? i cant fish in rev.
so now i'm banked!! any help? thank you is it a gear? spring?

ALWAYS check out the electrical first. That means a voltage check at the blue and green shift wires at the motor without disconnecting the wires. You should have battery voltage on the green wire in forward gear and battery voltage on the blue wire in reverse. Caution: Never apply voltage to both wires at the same time while the motor is running. It will bust something if you do.

Only after the electrical part is found to be ok, should you consider a possible problem in the lower unit. However you should make sure it is full of the right kind of oil "Premium Blend / Type C"

You probably have a bad push button shift switch.
