Hello, I have a '79 johnson 140hp that my father bought about ten years ago.
It has always stuck in reverse until you clicked past neutral into forward, but more recently it has started grinding when going into forward.
Sometimes it won't go into gear until almost quarter throttle. Is it likely that these problems
are related? Any insight on what to do would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like a stretched shift cable. Does it work OK with the cable disconnected?

Not sure Dhadley, I will have a look after work. Thanks. The boat is out of the water but I should still be able to check that by hooking up the garden hose, right?

You can but be real carefull not to over rev it :(
2000 rpm's being the MAX--
It'd be better to put it in a barrell, i have a plastic one i cut in half, it blows the water out quick so that has to be watched too- good luck :)
