I just purchased a 1996 Larson 16' SEI Boat, the steering seems nice and tight but at low speeds the boat is all over the place. I noticed on the Alpha Outdrive that this one has a plate instead of a trim tab, could this be the problem??? Like I said the steering seems tight with no play and handles real good at all speeds except when idling. Any help would be appreciated

Re: 1996 Larson 16' SEI Steering Question

The trim tab is there for boats with no power steering and only comes into play at planning speeds. The wonder you have is normal for a single prop boat. there are several forces acting against you, current, hull, trim and prop rotation. try trimming up a little at a time to find the sweet spot. It wont go away but it should get better.

My boat does the same thing. It's a 180 Sport with a 4.3L. I'm going to a 4 blade SS prop for other reasons. Maybe it will also minimize the low speed wander.
