I have a 2001 Sea ray 210 BR with a the Mercruiser 5.0 EFI. It usually starts great, but once it get warmed up, I get a lot of black smoke and occasionally it will crank and crank and will only start if I go full throttle. When it does start, it sputters a bit, blows a lot of black (not blue) smoke and then runs fine. What should I do? The local shop said they fixed a vacuum line and that was the culprit, but it is still doing it.

Tell them to pull ECU codes. If it's running that poorly, it should be noting an out-of-whack condition at one of the sensors.

Black smoke indicates an overly rich mixture. I would suspect a faulty MAP sensor. A scan tool will show the real time readings from the sensor.

black smoke means too much fuel and not enough oxygen, in other words bad fuel mixture. but thats basically repeating whats already been said.
