Took for maiden voyage approx 3 mi run, on return the water/temp gauge lit up and warning buzzer sounded. Put motor in neutral and checked for water exiting port....there was lots and it was cool. After shuting down engine and checking under cover....slight odour like electric wires burning...started engine again and proceeded approx 200 yds and same thing happened. Is there something else that could cause the warning indicator to react as it does appear to be getting water pumped thru the engine?

Re: 35 hp Johnson

what 35 hp Johnson? year? model#? the tale tell is an indicator the water pump is moving water, does not indicate volume of water, or the fact that the thermostat is opening an cooling the block. burn wire smell is indication something was hot enough to melt the insulation. check wire for bare spots.

Burnt paint?? Head gasket replacement is required as well as fixing the cooling system.

If you are looking at a tell-tale (pee hole), water coming out there is before it goes through the powerhead. That is why it is cool--it hasn't picked up any heat yet. It doesn't mean anything is actually going through the powerhead.

EDIT: 1976 or 1977? They are notorious for the water inlet getting obstructed with weeds and stuff and burning up the engine. You stop and the obstruction falls off and the pump works again. Till next time. P poor design.
