I was curious as to how comparable the johnson drive shafts and the evinrude shafts were for that year. The Johnson 61? drive shaft, that i have access to, is 4 splinned at the top and 11 at the bottom and measures 26". would this drive shaft work in my 58 rude? model 15024? thanks.
so, by having a shop manual it would have said, the johnson and evinrude models are identical, just buy what fits? just not wanting to spend $250 on a drive shaft if i can get one for $25.
BRP's on-line parts lists only go back to 1968, so I would suggest checking with an old time dealer, who will have paper PL's back further, to be certain. Most likely, J and E are identical mechanically for your model in a given year. Not sure about other years, however.
What is the spline arrangement on your existing drive shaft?
johnson and evinrude driveshafts are the same for any given year. the only difference in the 50's and 60's john/evin are the bosses on the powerhead for the cowl mounts and stuff that pertains to the cowls being different. The main part of the carbs. engine internals and midsections down are the same.
I don't believe that the drive shaft would interchange from a '61 to '58. I know the gears are cut different from '61. I'd wait for F-R for sure. I know they are both 4 at the top, both 26 inches, but I'm thinking the splines at the bottom may be different. IF F-R doesn't answer by this evening, I'll go look at mine and see for sure.
