clacking when shifting

My 1971 55 HP 557 HC would not shift into reverse the other day at the lake. I have read posts and adjusted accordingly, but I can have:
Smooth forward no reverse
Smooth reverse no forward
Clacking going into and jerking forward AND reverse
Hand propping seems to be correct. But under power its a no go.

1) Am I damaging my gears as I try to adjust this?

2) Should I drop the lower unit and put it together in a certain position like remote in forward and lower unit in forward?

3) I did not understand the spring in the 1/4" reference but my throttle does not rise before it tries to shift.

You guys are the best! Thanks!

Same thing happened to me one time. your clutch dog is worn out in the reverse caused by incorrect adjustment. Replace the dog. If not it will soon be jumping out of gear and you will have a hard time getting back to the docks.

I replaced the dog because it was worn just as you say. I saw it when I had it apart to replace my impeller, and ordered one to be safe.

Baylinerman, I was mistaken. I replaced the little brass shift yoke because it was really worn on one side. Sorry for any confusion.
