Johnson 7.5 hp exhaust leak

I have a 1950s somthing 7.5 hp johnson. It runs great with the cover off. I know that it is exhaust under the cover. How many things could this be and how hard is it to fix.

You running that thing in a barrel? There's your answer. It was designed to run on a boat on the lake.

Yep add that to the list. I always remove my cover when working in the barrel. Almost instantly stops smoking and smooths out.
