Caravelle Owner -Nice LIL Fishin Boat

Hey guys I just purchased my first project boat. 1972 Caravelle with a 650 65horse Merc.

It's got carb problems and perhaps even some setiment/rust in the tank. The upper unit carb was stuck open. I'm thinking about bypassing the tank and getting a 12 gallon plastic one, but someone suggested I run a glass bowl/filter on the fuel line next to the tank to catch the debris. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
