I have a mid-80s Evinrude 50 hp tiller. I'd like to get at the battery recharger thing under the flywheel as I believe its not charging the starter battery anymore.

My problem is the nut on top of the flywheel does not budge. I jammed a screwdriver in between the starter gear and flywheel and put a cheater bar on a socket wrench and practically tip my boat over without getting the nut to move.

This can't be that hard. Any advice for getting a frozen nut to move? Thanks for any advice.

It's a tight one but don't bust a nut!

I just popped mine off of a 1975 135HP. It took about 150 pounds of torque to loosen the nut on mine. Then I needed a harmonic balancer puller to pull the flywheel off of the shaft. When putting it all together the manual sets the torque at 100 ft-lbs.

There were a bunch of small holes driled into the top of my flywheel that I was able to put a bolt into and use the torque wrench socket, the bolt, and my engine hoist point combined to lock the flywheel and enable loosening of the bolt. One suggestion was to put it in gear and jam the prop with a 2x4.

Don't know if any of this advice applies to your motor. Hope this helps.

if you have access, use an impact wrench. this will bust the nut loose without the chance of damaging either the ring gear, or anything in the gear train if you jam the prop to get the nut loose.
