I have a late 80's oil injected Mariner 30 HP "tiller" electric start outboard made by Yamaha. The other day I started it up and and it ran fine , shut it down and smoke started to pour out from under the hood. Close inspection revealed the PVC jacket covering one of the throttle control cables had literally melted off of it. I've checked for other wires that may have contacted it causing a short and heat but nothing I can see. I'm suspecting a bad ground and it became the path of least resistance to ground. Where do I start trouble shooting this ? No broken ground wires or corrosion I can see !
