Re: powerhead swap, help

The powerhead should bolt right up. The newer engine has the new style shift mechanism under the bottom carb. Should use the same red plug electrical connector. The newer powerhead has the new style power trim box on the back of the exhaust cover and it will not work on your old three-wire trim system. Keep the older trim box under the splashwell. The newer engine has the new style enrichment valve and it electrically should hook up in place of the old choke solenoid, so plan to use the new carbs. You will have to use the new fuel manifold. Obviously, the old engine does not have the newer fuel/oil pump-you can decide if you want to keep it on the new block. If you do, you'll have to transplant the oil tank too. The newer engine will be more powerful, as it is rated for 115 hp at the propshaft, whereas the old one is crank rated. The control cables changed in 79, so check the cable end connections under the cowling.
