I have a '99 yamaha 4-stroke 50hp. This is a rookie question, but, when checking the oil in the lower unit should it run out the top plug when removed if full. I lost some when i fumbled the bottom plug while checking for water.

Thanks

Usually the only time it runs out the top hole is if you have water intrusion.
I usually lose some oil fumbling around trying to get the threads to line up. The LU is not going to miss that little bit of oil.

it might overflow when hot, but to check the oil u need to drain the whole thing and put new oil in, thats the only proper way to do it. Top hole is for the bubbles to come out when refilling.
