I would like to put an electric start on my motor but cannot find much information about it. I know they are available from this forum as well as seeing my same motor for sale with an electric start. I have found the actual starter motor for sale new with the gear on it but I do not know what else I will need to mount it. The wiring and solenoid are not a big deal, I can figure that out. What I am trying to find is information about mounting the starter motor. A good photo or diagram would be great because I can fabricate just about any part I need to. An actual mount would be even better because then I can just bolt it on.
Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated.
If I were you, I'd look at laingsoutboards.com, or even better, place a free ad on aomci.org for a starter bracket. The bracket is the key to the deal.

My guess is that there are more people looking for that bracket than there were brackets ever made.
Thanks JB and FR. The bracket in the image by FR looks like something I can fabricate. If anyone happens to have a good quality photo of the bracket on the motor, that would be a huge help.
If F-R says that the bracket is the same as a '58 evinrude starter bracket, I can easily post a few close-ups for you.
BTW, if you can fabricate more than one of those reasonably cheaply, you could make yourself some money. I'd buy one from you, myself!

Well, I can't guarantee it, but as far as I know the '58 has provision for the silencer bolt. Otherwise, same. As far as I know.

Thanks for the pics JB. They are perfect. I will start on the bracket this weekend and let you know how it goes. I do not know how cheap I can make it, we will see. The collar that fits around the starter will certainly be the challenge.
Good pics Jason... You just happened to have a spare starter and bracket hanging around Heck, you don't need another one!
Looks like Steve has "starter envy"!!!
Really, I haven't found anyone I can trust to weld the crack in that starter bracket yet. When I do I'm going to mount it and drive that motor a while to see how I like it. I mismatched a different pinion gear with the gear set on the '58 fastwin the starter fits and it has a very slight gear whine. I'm going to have to see what you guys think about it before I put any major time on that motor.
I'm eager to see your how your starter bracket comes out, Moby!

Unfortunatly, I was unsuccesful in fabricating the bracket. It was just too much work. I found a used bracket with a motor but the gear is not quite right. Is there a away to find out which gear I need to properly match the gear on the flywheel. As a reminder, I have a 1968 18HP short shaft. Is there a resource for new gears? I looked on the BRP site but it does not list an electric starter for my motor.
