I've just purchased what seems to be a decent 1980 25HP Evinrude. The current owner had it sitting in a large bucket, but the water level wasn't too high, so I had him shut it down right away after it started. I know that on my '86 9.9, the water inlet is higher than this and I didn't want to take the chance that it wasn't getting water. The seller said that I wouldn't see water coming out of a pee hole and that it just exited through the exhaust tube, just in front of the prop (this was indeed under water just barely).
Long story short, I purchased it (how could I say no at $300?). My questions stems from the "pee hole". Should I see this or is the seller correct in that it doesn't have one? I don't want to get it on the lake and then have it die from my own stupidity..
yep, it should have one. Look for a tube (#92) going down on the shifter side. I basically have the same motor an '81 johnson 25hp. It pees from the start.
$300 is a great price. I would change the impeller and see if that fixes it.
edit: added pic.

Mark,
I popped the hood off my motor as soon as I got home.
I'm sorry, but I gave you a bumb steer on the water hose. Its not #92. It's actually located on the opposite side, which is not shown in the pic. But on my motor it does wrap around to a discharge nipple on the shifter side.
I would check the intake screen, water tube and intake passages for blockage as well. Sometimes mud or trash can clog it up and stop water.

Thanks for the post. I thought I found it on the shifter side, underneath the cowl, facing down and to the rear, but it's a really small nipple. I used a small piece of twisted pair wiring (untwisted) and it initially wouldn't go in more than a few cms, but with some probing, it finally went in about 16 inches. I did this a few times and hope that is indeed the nipple.
I'll know more when I take the cowl off and/or get it in the water to test.. Thanks for the reply!
Confirmation, what I found is indeed the pee hole. I got to the marina today and mounted the motor and ran a wire up the hole again as far as I could and tested the motor. Still no water, and block got warmer than I would have liked. I shut it down and had the mechanic take a look. Impeller and wear plates gone, so I've asked them to replace what's needed.
Agreed. I'm already impressed by this motor. The first cold start after I mounted it on the transom was literally 1/2 pull to get it rolling. Couldn't believe that.
Once I get this back in the water, I'll post results.
