Good morning everyone,

I have a 1982 4.5HP Evinrude that was given to me, but it comes with a problem. I cannot get it into forward or reverse. I have disassembled it and it looks like a gear is stripped in the gear box because the rod attached just spins with no resistence. My question to you is this, can the gear itself be replaced or should I start looking for a new gear box? I require this engine for forward only so I was thinking that I could have the rod welded so the motor is always in forward. What are your thoughts on that?

Have a look here for the parts break down and availability. I think it would be a mistake to weld something in the gear case but then again I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to these things. Best of luck. Rick.
