Today I took my 1997 Mariah 21' boat out that is powered by a 5.7L LX Mercruiser. I was an idiot and forgot to put the drain plug in before launching the boat. (Not smart) After boating for approximately 10-15 minutes I realized that we were taking on water and immediately turned the motor off and jumped in and screwed the plug in and stopped it from sinking. The water level seemed to be around the bottom of the motor at that time. The motor was also running at that time. I then drove back to the dock and put the trailer in and drove the boat onto the trailer. Then removed the drain plub and then drove the boat up the incline to let the water drain. Good news is that I did not sink, bad news is that the boat will not start now. Any ideas??? When I turn the ignition, nothing happens. Please help I cannot wait to get on the water and hope I did not ruin it.

Did water get into the air intake?

I would pull the distributer and see if any moisture got in there. I'm not too familiar with boating but I am pretty knowlegeable when in comes to trouble shooting auto engines.

No bilge pump?? or am I off base here? If there was water in the bilge could you have pumped some out before trying to restart?

Pad, First look for a circuit breaker to reset. A lot of MerCruisers has a red button on the upper left of the motor. Next look for a fuse, likely under the dashboard. You might test power on the slave solenoid on top of the motor, when the key is turned. If no power, trouble is in key switch or power to key switch. If power, trouble is in starter solenoid or starter.

You do have the motor in neutral?
