I have an 86 3.7l 170. It seems to be running fine. When i run it fast for a little while she smells like what seems to me like an overheating smell. Like the smell of car when it overheats. The temp gauge is normal though. The smell gets really strong at times. Engine continues to run fine but stinks. Any ideas.

p.s. I am a boat rookie so dont be afraid to state the obvious

Locate the engine water pump cover, on the front of the engine...it sits behind the belt pulley.

Run your hand around the bottom of the cover, and see if you find any antifreeze seepage...there is a 'weep' hole at the bottom of the cover.

This engine has a history of the cam seals in this cover failing...and the cam shaft wearing grooves where the seals ride. The first indication is coolant at the weep hole...and if ignored, this coolant will eventually end up in the engine oil.

I just had that repair done a few weeks ago. I had that infamous coolant leak through the weep hole. No coolant coming from there at all...
