I have a Johnson 1964 40HP with a bad starter. When I research for a replacement or rebuild kit, I can't find anything that far back.
Does anyone know where to get a replacement, or a rebuild kit.

you either need a parts manual, which you should have if you are going to own prior to 1968. here http://www.outboardbooks.com/ or take it off and take to a starter/alternator shop.
