Use 1998 Evinrude 90hp power trim on 78 evinrude 85hp?

Hey Everyone,

I have a 1978 Evinrude 85hp that works great, except the power trim is not working. The solenoid still clicks but no action from the trim, it has been this way since I bought the boat 1.5 years ago.

A guy locally has a 1998 evinrude 90 horse he is parting out. Will the power trim/tilt unit from the '98 fit my '78?

Andy,
You might be able to make it work, but it would take a bit of doing. They changed the clamp bracket assemblies in the early 1990s. Not saying it can't be done, but it might be easier and cheaper to just fix the one you've got.

Thanks CW, I was just looking to see if it could be a direct swap. I syspect my problem is the electric pump/motor, I wonder if they are interchangeable between the '96 and 78?
