forward / reverse linkage

i have a 1988 evinrude 40 hp and i cant figure out how to disconnect the linkage to drop the lower unit. if the over heat buzzer has sounded is it to late for the motor, as soon as i heard the buzzer i shut it off?

you should be OK, find it easiest to remove bottom carb, to get the the linkage back under the carb.
