prop does not turn--1971 Evindrude outboard

I have a 1971 40 hp Evinrude outboard (40152) that I am working at getting running. I have worked out several issues but am now uncertain.

I had it out last year and heard a gear crunch type sound and the prop stopped turning.

I did pull the lower unit and it seems solid. If I hold the crank shaft, it does not slip when attempting to spin the prop. Either forward or reverse.

I am assuming then it is on the top end where the crank shaft interacts with ????

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Let me know what manual or whatever would give me a good picture of what I need to repair.

Get an original OMC outboard service manual for your specific year/model. With the lower unit removed can you rotate the prop? If not your going to have to pull it apart for further inspection. Rick.
