I'll keep it brief. 1985 4SK with under 10 hours. Dad stored it under his enclosed porch for several years. He asks me to sell it so I take it home, dump the fuel, change the plug, clean and paint the lower unit. Add new fuel/oil and place it in a 30 gallon bucket with fresh water. It starts on the 4th pull! Nice. I let it run and then notice 2 or 3 leaks (besides the normal water pump piddle). Closer inspection reveals an aluminum piece sticking out proud of the cylinder housing. Lots of corrosion. I figure maybe it froze during winter and cracked or just corrosion. Question is can it be saved. I've attached pictures. What a shame.
I had a Yamaha 4HP just like that for my large metal canoe...only mine was a few years later model(maybe 1994). you've got a really nice motor there and it will be a real shame if it's totally ruined due to corrosion. looks like it will have to be disassembled in order to do the necessary welding/repairs, but it might well be worth it and maybe a bit of fun to do, if you have the time and skills. otherwise you have a real good parts motor to sell on E-Bay for anyone with a similar 4HP. Heck, there's a few hundred dollars worth of parts there! Good Luck!
I was thinking the same thing regarding repair. I figure I can start picking away at taking it down to a level where a repair can be done, if it can be done. Worse case, like you said is that it's a great donor for parts. I hope to repair it though as it has so few hours on it and runs so well.
Can anyone recommend a good manual? I was checking out Seloc manuals and you can download them online as well. I read some reviews and some folks complained that the manual was too vague because it covers so many models and years.
