Putting Tilt/Trim on my old fiberglass Lund. Running a 1975 70 horse Johnson.

Can anyone with first hand knowledge of the Pow'rTran tilt/trim units share some advice? They use a ball-screw drive instead of hydraulic.

I like the idea that the PowerTran either works or it doesn't, no slow leaks, no hoses or seals to deal with. No hydraulic oil. Ease of maintenance and repair. Ability to lock the unit down and run at zero trim if the unit fails.

I'm concerned about not knowing the reliability and performance of the ball-screw design. I don't know if 63 degrees of tilt on the PowerTran is enough or if the CMC 90 degrees is a must have. Its $500 either way which is a big investment for me.

Anyone who can offer some guidance, I'd sure appreciate it! Thank you.

Re: Pow'rTran vs CMC Tilt Trim

Never heard of the Power tran but Ihave run a CMC for 6-7 years now and can vouch for them.

The only thing I can think of right now is the CMC has alot less moving parts, the motor is the only thing on the CMC that moves, with the other one there is the motor turning a gear turning a screw that turns in a giant nut, lots of stuff to wear out.

the CMC units come with my highest recommendation, as I said I have had mine for 6-7 years and never had a bit of trouble with it, they are a bit pricey aren't they.

Re: Pow'rTran vs CMC Tilt Trim

I too, have a 1975 Johnson, 115. I installed a CMC 130 last year and am pleased with it. Easy to install and operates smoothly and fast enough. Threre are claims that it adds performance. I have seen no changes positive or negative.
One thing it does is it hangs the motor some 5 inches off the transom. This adds some bending. Make sure your transom is sound. I added load spreader bars to better distribute the load over a larger area of the transom.

If you have a factory TNT and removed it as I did to save weight, you lost the reverse tilt lock. Therefore the engine is free to swing up if you back too hard. I am exploring ways to preventt this. If you don't have factory TNT, there is a locking lever to prevent this.

See the descriptions in the attached file.

Good luck, Mike
