Need Help with Merc 65 (1974)

Hi there my engine wont start it turns over but the sputters out. I just cleaned the carbs and got a lot of crud out of those. Plugs look fine what else could it be???

Dan, Check the compression, and make sure you have a nice snappy spark on each plug. Did you clean out the idle passage in the carbs? Did you set the float and idle mixture per spec? You might report back with findings.
