I have a Merc 9.9, which was given to me by my dad. I think, from the manual that came with it, it's a 94 model. (S/N 06218691)
Today I took him out fishing. On the way back in, it just kicked itself out of gear. It's a tiller shift, so I am assuming something happened in the lower unit. I can see the down-rod moving when I twist the throttle, but there is no engagement either forward or reverse.
By profession, I'm an aircraft mechanic, so I know my way around a screwdriver and wrench, but I have no clue where to begin in troubleshooting this problem. I have no diagrams and cannot find one online, nor can I find any kind of troubleshooting chart to tell me where to start.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I've had a lot of people look at this post, but no one has offered any assistance. Could someone PLEASE give me some advice? Thanks!!
