i have a 1968 thunderbolt 50 hp and something is wrong with it. when i turn the key, the fly wheel will turn but very slow and hesitant. the wires that are connected to the battery will then start to smoke up. i have a few pictures of what could possibly be wrong. and also i do not know what these parts are called and would like for someone to help me figure the name for the part.

inside, there are some plugs or something that stick out. i see that 1 of them had broken off. i was wondering if that could be the main problem? if so, where and how much would this particular part cost? thank you.

Re: mercury help

The same thing happened to my plug (without the hot wires)
A tab broke off one of the terminals on the motor side of the harness, this could easily create a high resistance situation , depending on what circuit it is, and cause your starter wires to overheat (especially if it's your ground wire!)

All I did was remove the plug from the housing to access the wires inside and cut that wire from the plug and bypassed it around the connector using some spare wire and a "bullet" connector so it could be unplugged for harness removal. it's a bit of a ghetto fix but considerably cheaper than replacing the motor harness.
