My 1996 5.7 carborated Merc with an alpha one outdrive makes a grinding noise when shifting. My motor is idling at 1000 rpm. Is the idle speed to fast and could that be causing the problem? If it is ideling too fast how do I slow it down? I did hit the outdrive hard enough to bend the skag last month but the boat seems to run fine with the possible exception of the slight grinding noise when shifting and I am not sure that the noise is something new. I can only hear the noise when I have the boat connected to water and running on the trailer.

Yes, it's idling too fast. 650 to 700 in fwd gear (IN THE WATER) is what you should have. Also put it into gear quickly, not a speed shift, but don't let it ratchet more than 1 time.

How you slow it down, depends on which carb you have.
