What is a decent used price for 9.9 outboard

i just found out my 1985 Johnson Sailmaster is going to cost >$500 to repair. It has low hours - don't use it that much on a sailboat -- only on and off the mooring most of the time.

Is it worth repairing? Should I be able to find newer engines for about the same cost as the repair? Any guides that might be suggested?

Thanks

What kind of repair work is needed?

I see 9.9's for sale on Craigslist anywhere from $100-$700.
I see nice 9.9-15 hp motors all the time for $500. The lower priced motors are sometimes priced accordingly but usually they are good motors that are worth more but the Seller doesn't know that.
I wouldn't pay $500 to get it fixed. I would find a nice motor for that amount or less and then keep your motor for parts.

remember the shaft length if you look for another motor. may be hard to find.

The WATER TUBE needs to be replaced. Was done before the 2004 season, so the repair lasted 4 seasons. When done in 2004 the part number was 395124 and the tech charged 4 hours -- remove power head and drill tube out of housing.

This does not sound like something I would undertake myself.

you must be in extreme salt water, and are not flushing the motor after use.

TRUE. The boat and motor are on a mooring. I could pull up to the club pier and flush but then would get salt on the trip over to the mooring.

Are there any air cooled outboards?

Thanks

I'm sorry to say that due to the conditions of use this is going to be a reoccuring problem with any motor. You have a low hour, reliable powerhead and gearcase. You don't know what you'll get in a used replacement. Especially in salt water country. I say either learn to do the repair yourself or bite the bullet and have it done.
