75 hp Johnson Shifting Problem

I can get the control box to shift into reverse and neutral, but not forward. Forward is LOCKED, so to speak, any ideas? I took the white shifting box apart but don't see or know what to look at. Is it in the motor? Thanks for the help. ( I have a jet unit on the bottom), this little break down cost me a moose hunting trip last fall.

Since it is a generic question (no model/year), I'll give a generic answer. Disconnect the cables from the motor and see if you can shift the motor by hand. If you can, the problem undoubtedly is in the control.

The general idea for single lever controls is that what I refer to as a one-tooth gear on the handle/throttle member grabs and meshes with another one-tooth gear on the shifter member. Look for wear on those teeth.
