Default Troubleshooting 1971 Mercury 7.5

Hello,
I have a 1971 Mercury 7.5 that came as a kicker on a recent boat purchase . I am waiting on the manual to be mailed to me .
.
The previous owner replaced the plug wires, plugs and rebuilt the carb last season and said it ran ok.
I have determined so far that there is no spark at the plugs.
Is there anyone that can point me in the right dirrection for troubleshooting the ignition while I wait on the repair manual ?
Thanks very much

ok , I found a spot that had rubbed through the insulation on the stator positive wire .
Is it possible to tape that spot for now or would that "grounding" have ruined the stator ?
Also ,any answers on troubleshooting any of the ignition would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks again .
