Frustred with the L drive

I just completely rebuilt my 89 125 hp force l drive powerhead. IT's back in the boat now all hooked up completely. BUT I HAVE NO SPARK. I bought the boat for cheap and the previous owner never had it running, guess he fell for it too. The stator and trigger doesnt look to bad other than alittle rust which I got rid of. The CD and coils "look" ok but havent tested them yet. Is it a common thing for these parts to go out? Now a dumb question. This is my first 2-stroke motor, I was checking power to the ignition switch and the yellow/black that come from/to the CD modules, should that be a hot connection or is it only hot when the motor is cranking? I am guessing they are magnetos which only get power when the stator spins and they feed the coils? Iv'e already got more money in the engine than I bought the boat for!! Help with this would be awesome. Thanks

Yellow/black wires, only hot when engine is running.
When key is off, they go to ground to short out the ignition and turn off the motor.
