Hi,
I have a 1966 Evinrude 33 electric start. It started and ran fine last fall when I bought it after I had the local high school auto shop students clean it up and adjust the breaker points. Problem is this spring. I turn the key to the start position. The solenoid clicks and the starter motor turns once and then makes a grinding sound (sounds more electrical than mechanical, I don't think it is trying to turn and getting caught.) When I turn the key back to the on position and then to the start position again nothing happens. The solenoid does not even click. I have to turn the key all the way off, then to start to get any response from the starter. My question is where does the problem lie? Is it the key switch or solenoid or something with the starter motor?
BTW, I have the parts manual and service manual for this motor if anyone has any questions about them.

Re: Evinrude 33 hp

I just bought the same motor and had the exact same problem just as you have described it. My problem ended up being a bad wiring connection. In my case it was at the battery terminal. I fixed the connection and it cranks just fine. Might be worth looking in to.

I need a part name and a part number for the round piece right behind the propeller and before the bearing. It Has a shaft seal that slides into the center hole and an o-ring that goes in a groove on the outside perimiter. I have the new seals but this piece is broken. If you know where to order this part that would be extremely helpful.

Re: Evinrude 33 hp

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try. The part you need is "Housing, oil retainer". Part # 303050. If you go to evinrude.com and click on parts and accessories, pick the year (the oldest is 1968 but I have ordered parts for my 66 and they are the same), click on 33hp, pick gearcase group, it will bring up a parts diagram and you can order the part you need.
