Hello
I have a 64 Evinrude Lark VIII 40 Horse with "Selectric Shift", while I was on the water the engine bogged down and I lowered the throttle and attempted to shift to neutral, when I hit the electric switch the shift there was a snap from the engine and then it reved back up in neutral. Now I can't get it to shift back into gear at all. I figure I must have broken the solenoid for the electric shift but I'm not expert. I'm good with engines but new to outboards, what might be wrong and is this something I can fix myself?

Re: Broken Electric Shift?

There is a rubber coated wire that runs' down thru the exhaust housing to the gearcase. It makes me wonder, from age, if the rubber coating has failed, and shorted out the shift wires. I've had those older wires turn to crumbs in my hands.
