Angry 1963 Evinrude 40 HP Electric Shift water pumping problem

I changed the impeller but all I get it a little spray out of the hole just under the engine head. Should there be more. I would think it would come out like from a garden hose eh?

Or does it get pumped out from the exhaust above the prop underwater?

It is NOT a garden hose!! That motor has a thermostat controlled, recirculating cooling system. When the thermostat is closed, a bit of spray comes out the back to tell you that it is working, but most of the water goes back to the water pump for recirculaton till the engine temperature is warm enough to open the thermostat. When the 'stat opens, there will be a heavier spray, but still not a garden hose. With an open 'stat, most of the water goes out with the underwater exhaust.

You should be aware that the 'stat constantly monitors the temperature and opens and closes as required to maintain a steady temp. So, the spray varies all the time, and is closed more than it is open at idle speeds.

Actually, this is exactly how a car's cooling system works, except they use a radiator instead of a lake for the cool water supply. A car's 'stat also constantly monitors the system and opens and closes as required to maintain proper temp.
