Hi you all,

I have an 1981 Evinrude 140 that stalls out when put into gear forward or reverse. Also, it stalls when in idle after a little bit. Now, I tried it in my driveway at the house and it ran perfect, no problems. I recently(2 months ago) got it rebuilt by a local certified michanic because cylinder #1 was out. He rebuilt and looked over the entire motor. The michanic put new power packs on, cleaned the carbs, new power head bearings, new rings and pistons, new water float valves, new gaskets, new fuel hoses and fuel bulb and general tune up applications such as new water pump, new lower unit oil, and so on. It starts up great and runs strong. But, when you run to your spot and fish for a couple hours and then start it up. You have to rev-it in nutaruel and pop it into gear at 1500 rpm to get home. I do not like doing that but I had to make it back. The idle runs about 800 to 900 rpm and slightly rough. Please help!!! Maybe I can do it myself because, I just spent $1600.00 to have it rebuilt. I am pretty angry.

So it runs fine cold but fails when it gets warm?

could very well be dropping a cylinder due to an ignition coil failing when hot,
you need to do some tests, a timing light will show whether its dropping spark to one hole when warmed up.
If so, swap a couple coils around and see if the problem follows the coil.

anyway, sounds like the mechanic did a lot of work for short money, its not exactly a new engine and certain components start to wear out.
Just a matter of tracking it down now.

I am no expert but, wouldn't it have the same symptons out of water if it was a coil or electrical? Also, It runs great at all other rpm's but low rpm's.
The only thing I have not changed on the fuel system is the original fuel pump. I talked to my michanic and he seems to guess it might be the jets or butterfly valves. He said that on the older engines like that when they had an idle issue they usually replaced the valves or jets. There are only a couple of settings not like the new engines, he said. I am tired of him guessing and spending more money. I don't Know, what do you think?

No the thing you are missing is when its "in the water" its under a greater load than "in the driveway" , so it might =seem= to run perfect with no load and then seem to act up in the water.
In fact it may be running the same all the time.


err...if this guy is guessing and swapping parts he's not a mechanic, I'm a chef and I know how to diagnose and eliminate without buying any parts.

A timing light will show whether its dropping spark to a cylinder.

Spraying fuel into the carb throats will show whether its lacking fuel in one carb. If you spray fuel into carb #1 and the idle smooths out ...you got it.

if you don't have a timing light pull one plug lead at a time and see if it will run, if you find a particular plug makes no difference to the idle when disconnected... you found it.

Get a factory service manual and DIY, its simpler than you think.
