Vibration when my outdrive is not in the lowest position

Hi All,

I have a 2001 Chaparral Sunesta with a 5.7 liter Mercruiser and bravo III outdrive. I've owned the boat for 2 seasons. I have a nagging concern over a vibration that I have when my outdrive is trimmed up. If I run my outdrive in the full down position it runs smooth as silk. If I raise the outdrive to say 50% down there is a noticeable vibration. Goes away when I lower the drive. I thought it might be cavitation as the drive comes up and the props create more wake but I think I was in denial. Any advice?

Thanks

At 50% trimmed up the u joints are at extreme angle and you should not go much above idle at that position. The vibration is normal and running it at higher RPMs is very tough on them and not recommended.

Is that 50% of full up to trailer position or just in the trim range?
If its in the trim range it should not vibrate.
Good idea to pull the drive and inspect the u-joints and gimbal bearing....

Have the u-joints checked before you have major problems...

#1-Has the drive ever been off?

If not its been 8 years time to change the bellows, gimbal bearing and clean and grease up the u-joints. I bet in is the gimbal bearing.
